Frequently asked qUEstions

Get To Know ROQ

What can I expect when I show up at ROQ?

Expect clarity and intention at every step. Our flagship 60-minute, instructor-led class includes 40 minutes of climbing tailored to your ability and goals, 10 minutes of rowing, and 10 minutes of strength training using tools like dumbbells and bands. You’ll share the experience with around 30 others in a high-energy environment designed specifically for this type of training.

After class, enjoy premium amenities: saunas, showers, towel service, and lockers that don’t run out of battery. At ROQ, the details matter.

I’ve never climbed at all before, is ROQ for me?

Yes! Our classes are designed to help you learn a new activity efficiently while also building general fitness. Rock climbing is creative, athletic, sustainable, and rewarding. We recognize there are other fitness options out there, but we think you’ll have more fun, get fitter faster, and stick with it longer at ROQ.

I’ve only tried climbing a few times, is ROQ for me?

Absolutely. Traditional climbing gyms can be overwhelming. First-timers often get limited guidance — maybe you complete a few climbs, but feel stuck on the ones you can’t quite unlock. You leave frustrated, and like you didn’t get a workout. Or maybe you are improving, but know you could be progressing faster.

ROQ is different — from the moment you walk in, you’ll know exactly what to do, minute-by-minute. Our climbing walls offer an effectively infinite number of climbs, letting you progress at the pace that’s right for you.

I’ve been climbing for a while now, is ROQ for me?

Yes. The sheer volume of training advice online can be more confusing than helpful. Maybe you default to “try the hardest problem I can, as often as I can,” or maybe you’re following a plan that’s boring, lonely, and hard to implement — ever tried doing 4x4s on a crowded board? At ROQ, we eliminate the guesswork. We’ll tell you exactly what to do — and provide the perfect environment to do it in.

I’m an elite climber with a long training history, is ROQ for me?

Yes! Even if you know exactly what you need to do, ROQ offers a facility unlike any other. Classes are designed to give you the autonomy to implement self-directed modifications on a dedicated board, in an atmosphere built for maximum try-hard — and actual fun. Outside of class hours, you'll have access to cleaner, less-crowded boards and unique tools like ceiling-mounted slo-mo cameras aimed at our adjustable-angle boards, paired with a broadcast-quality playback station.

Will the ROQ facility be used strictly for classes?

No, we’ll offer open gym hours at least two days a week to start. You can use this time to climb however you see fit.

Why are all 14 boards Kilter?

We love the Kilter Board holds for high-volume, capacity-style training. They offer a massive selection of climbs for newer climbers and elite athletes alike. The movement style is generally athletic and dynamic - perfect for making workouts fun and engaging. 4 of our boards will be the Kilter home wall layout. The home wall layout includes more challenging holds and is a great tool for the outdoor-focused climber.

What are the benefits of ROQ’s training for my climbing?

ROQ’s training improves power endurance, capacity, technique, general aerobic fitness, supporting strength, and more. Our HIIT-style classes are especially good for building capacity — your ability to do more moves in a single session or across multiple sessions. More moves = more practice = more sends and faster progress.

When is ROQ opening?

We are planning to open in early Fall 2025.

Where is ROQ located?

1415 Elliott Ave W, Seattle WA 98119. We’re in the Elliott Junction building alongside neighbors like Dantini Pizza, Holy Mountain Brewing Company and Old Log Cabin Distillery.

Who is the founder?

Michael Hauss started climbing in 2013 and has been obsessed with movement and performance his whole life. He was an All-American swimmer at Princeton, where he studied Computer Science. He’s climbed difficult outdoor boulders, sport routes, and alpine lines around the globe, and is a NASM-certified personal trainer.

In 2022, Michael left his career as a Product Manager in the technology industry to travel the world climbing with his wife — and to start building ROQ.

Why build ROQ?

Michael started ROQ to combine the best parts of group fitness — the energy, structure, passionate coaching, and camaraderie — with climbing, a sport that’s endlessly creative, athletic, and rewarding.
