Why Every Climber Should Try the Boards
If you’ve ever walked by a climbing board and thought, “That’s for elite climbers, not me” — you’re not alone.
Boards have developed a reputation as a tool for advanced climbers. The truth? They’re an incredibly useful tool for progression at any level, especially if you’re still building your base or returning to the sport.
Why Boards Can Feel Intimidating
Boards allow climbers to set problems harder than most commercial routes, so strong climbers naturally spend time on them.
But boards are just as valuable for anyone looking to improve movement, strength, and consistency — provided the space makes them approachable.
Not sure? When we open, we hope you’ll come check it out for yourself. We’ve already run test sessions with newer climbers and the response was clear: it works, it’s fun, and it feels approachable right away.
What Makes ROQ Different
Most gyms have a single steep board, often dominated by experienced climbers. At ROQ, we’ve designed the space differently. We’ll have 14 Kilter Boards, with a strong bias for more approachable angles:
- 4 vertical
- 2 at 10°
- 2 at 25°
- 2 at 35°
- 2 at 45°
- 2 adjustable boards (from vertical to 70°)
No waiting. No guessing. No trying to adapt to an angle that feels too much, too soon. You’ll have access to the setup that works for where you are — and where you want to go.
Why We Chose Kilter
We chose Kilter Boards because of their uniquely ergonomic holds and movement style. The holds are designed to feel good in your hands and encourage movement that’s athletic, dynamic, and fun. That’s exactly what we want ROQ workouts to be about.
Why Boards Are So Effective
Boards aren’t just usable — they’re one of the best tools to support progression. Here’s why:
- Consistency: Fixed holds let you track and measure progress over time.
- Scalability: Thousands of climb options from beginner to advanced, plus adjustable angles to dial in intensity.
- Efficiency: No wandering around the gym. Show up, get quality reps, and leave feeling accomplished.
At ROQ, our classes are built to guide you through the board in a way that builds confidence and momentum. We’re confident you’ll surprise yourself.
The Bottom Line
The Kilter Board isn’t reserved for elite climbers. It’s for anyone seeking a structured, reliable way to improve — whether you’ve been climbing six days, six months, or a couple of years.
Progress comes from showing up and doing the work with purpose. Boards are a powerful way to make that happen.
All that’s left is to get ready — and come give it a try when we open.
